     Full Description

Discover one of the finest former Spanish settlements in Southern California on a morning walking tour through the historical heart of Santa Barbara.

Meet your local guide at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art to start the walk. Here you’ll be able to view a mural by the great Mexican artist, David Alfaro Siqueiros.

Proceed on to the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, listed on the US National Registry of Historic Places, where you’ll see famous murals of historic importance. While here be sure to take the elevator to the top of the 85-foot tower to enjoy the unobstructed 360-degree view of Santa Barbara.

During the tour you will note that the majority of the buildings, old or new, are generally architecturally true to the Spanish Colonial, Mediterranean, or Moorish styles. In fact due to the majority of buildings in this area having red-tiled roofs, this tour is locally known as the ‘Red Tile Tour’.

Take time to discover the numerous historic structures in this area including Santa Barbara’s oldest adobe, which can be found in the El Presidio State Historic Park. The Presidio was founded in 1782 and the buildings here predate all the other buildings in Santa Barbara. Nearby you will also see the beautifully restored La Casa de la Guerra. During the Spanish period it was the home of the Presidio comandante, Jose de la Guerra.

Along the way we stop at C'est Cheese, where there’s an opportunity to sample the finest signature cheese platters, fresh and dried fruit and brush shoulders with Santa Barbara's gourmet shopper. After a morning spent retracing Santa Barbara’s history through the Spanish, Mexican and American eras, we return near our starting point through little know passages in El Paseo and La Arcada. This will be the perfect way to end the tour.
